Winterize a variable-speed pool pump

A variable-speed pump's freeze setting is not a substitute for a complete winterization plan. Identify the exact model, follow its power-isolation and drain instructions, and document every drain point and removed plug. Record valve positions and any attached plumbing that still holds water. Do not restart until the spring procedure is complete.

Document the pump close

  1. Identify the pump model and open its winterizing instructions.
  2. Record the electrical isolation and valve configuration used by the qualified technician.
  3. Photograph all model-specified drain points after the pump is drained.
  4. Record where drain plugs are stored and the spring restart warning.

For example, Pentair's IntelliFlo VS+SVRS manual distinguishes its anti-freeze feature from protection of system plumbing and calls for electrical isolation and drainage of the pump volute. That example does not establish the steps for every variable-speed pump. Use the installed model's instructions and preserve its exact drain-point proof.

Stop and verify

Do not rely on a scheduled low-speed run when a prolonged freeze, power outage, blocked line, or unknown sensor configuration is possible. Do not operate a dry pump. Electrical work and uncertain isolation belong to qualified personnel.

Proof to capture

  • Model and serial plate, pump display, and any freeze-setting screen.
  • Wide pad photo showing connected lines and valve positions.
  • Each drain point after drainage, plus plug count and storage place.
  • Any line, water feature, or auxiliary pump outside the drained circuit.

Questions

Does freeze protection replace winterizing a variable-speed pump?

No. A freeze-protection setting depends on power, sensors, circulation, and the specific system. Some pump manuals state that anti-freeze mode does not protect all system plumbing.

What pump proof should be saved?

Save the model plate, power and valve state, drain points after drainage, removed plugs and their storage location, and any line or component that could not be drained.
